Rare Victorian Single Fusee Mantle Clock Sir Walter Scott & His Dog Maida Statue

We are delighted to offer for sale this stunning Victorian single Fusee mantle clock inside a custom made glass dome with a lovely statue of Sir Walter Scot and his dog Miada A very good looking well made and decorative Victorian Scott memorial clock with a 12cm pierced Roman dial framing a single fusee five pillar timepiece movement with wheels of six crossings over a figure of a gilded Sir Walter Scott and his dog Maida. The clock is contained within a glass dome on a wooden base. The base is signed but its difficult to read, I have included a supersized picture, if anyone is good at deciphering script writing then please feel free to let me know what it says! I rarely say this but the clock is in retail perfect condition, the glass dome is free from cracks and has lovely period imperfections like little bubbles, its gold wrapped around the base. The clock movement winds with the key supplied easily and keeps time well As mentioned you have a very nice gilded statue of Sir Walter Scott and his Dog, there is a very famous statue of the pair of them which I have included a picture of Maida was a deerhound given to Scott by a friend and would become his dearest canine friend. Outside the door of Abbotsford, Scott’s Borders home, a statue of Maida lies with the words “Maidae marmorea dormis sub imagine Maida / Ante fores domini sit tibi terra levis” carved around it. “Beneath the sculptured form which late you wore sleep soundly, Maida, at your master’s door.” Scott was famous for his love of dogs, and they more often than not appeared in portraits with him. He cancelled a dinner engagement on the death of one, Camp, and buried him in sight of the window where he usually wrote. The friend who had expected Scott completely understood why he couldn’t face company that evening. Scott also gave his name to a breed of dogs. The Dandie Dinmont is named after a character based on James Davidson, who originally bred them in Guy Mannering. Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet, FRSE (15 August 1771 – 21 September 1832) was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright, poet and historian. Many of his works remain classics of both English-language literature and of Scottish literature. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, Old Mortality, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor. Although primarily remembered for his extensive literary works and his political engagement, Scott was an advocate, judge and legal administrator by profession, and throughout his career combined his writing and editing work with his daily occupation as Clerk of Session and Sheriff-Depute of Selkirkshire. A prominent member of the Tory establishment in Edinburgh, Scott was an active member of the Highland Society and served a long term as President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (1820–32). Scott gathered the disparate strands of contemporary novel-writing techniques into his own hands and harnessed them to his deep interest in Scottish history and his knowledge of antiquarian lore. The technique of the omniscient narrator and the use of regional speech, localized settings, sophisticated character delineation, and romantic themes treated in a realistic manner were all combined by him into virtually a new literary form, the historical novel. His influence on other European and American novelists was immediate and profound, and though interest in some of his books declined somewhat in the 20th century, his reputation remains secure.
