About the Item

A rare and superb sculptural clock depicting St Michael Slaying the Devil. Exquisitely modelled in bronze patinated white metal, it shows St Michael standing triumphantly above the slain Satan, hounds baying to each side. A snake entwined around his body. The dial is bronze mounted with 12 enamel cartouches with blue lettering. It is complete with the superb original and specially made serpent hands. The clock is modelled in the round with a glazed rear door to allow the movement to be seen, you could display the clock in the middle of a room or in front of a mirror. The French movement is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running! Guido Reni's painting of 1636 St Michael Archangel depicts St Michael wearing a Roman clock trampling Satan. Giuseppe Torretti's statue in the Baroque church of Santa Maria Assunta in Venice could also have been a source of inspiration to the sculptor. Condition of the case is excellent, the original bronze patination is in lovely condition. The small tips of the hounds ears are missing on two ears, there some slight wear to the ends of Satan's wings and there is an old repair to St Michaels sword. Dial is excellent with no damage. Complete with original pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required. Dimensions of clock: inches: Height 22 1/2", width 17 1/2", depth 7 1/2" centimetres: Height 57 cm, width 44.5 cm, depth 19 cm.

Wear consistent with age and use. Fully working and tested. Case is very good, patination is excellent, small loss to two ears of the hounds, sword has old repair, slight rub to Satan's wing. Dial is excellent.
