A faithful rendition of London's iconic Westminster Abbey, this magnificent bronze skeleton clock is a work of true horological mastery. Crafted by Evans of Handsworth, the timepiece represents the height of this famed clockmaster's skill. One of the most sought after and elusive of the rare three-train skeleton clocks, it tells time on an engraved and silvered dial with Gothic-style Roman numerals. Its chain-driven fusée gear trains, or winding mechanisms, control the time, as well as the steel gong hour strikes and the quarter-hour Westminster chimes, which are sounded on eight nested saucer bells. The accuracy of the complex mechanism is enhanced by a two-jar mercury pendulum, which compensates for changes in temperature, making this timepiece a work of precision as well as beauty. One of the most sought after and elusive of all skeleton clocks are those, such as the present example, that operate using the rare three-train mechanism. Most of the known examples have a single train, while a lesser amount were made with two trains. The rarest of all are those featuring three trains. This is because it is exceptionally difficult to make three winding mechanisms while maintaining the complex beauty of the skeleton clock. For this reason, skeleton clocks also rarely contain chimes or bells, with only a handful of known examples possessing a single spiral chime. This highly complex clock, on the other hand, not only contains a large spiral gong, but also eight bells that chime on the half hour. In spite of these complexities, the Westminster Abbey design remarkably still retains its extreme delicacy and aesthetic appeal, which is a testament to the skill of Evans of Handsworth. Adding to the elegance and rarity of this skeleton clock is its marble base and glass dome that provides protection while allowing for an unobstructed view of the timepiece.
