Exceptional Surinam-Themed Amsterdam Long-Case Clock
Located in Amsterdam, NL
A Surinam-themed Amsterdam long-case clock
The Netherlands, 1746-1756, dial signed Nicolaas Weylandt/Amsterdam
The case of the clock is made of Rio palisander veneer and snakewood, with the arch showing a painted scene of the harbour of Paramaribo, Fort Zeelandia and Dutch ships in anchorage, the spandrels decorated with figural representations of the four continents, the centre of the dial painted with Mercury, the god of trade, seated on a bale signed VCS (Vereenigde Compagnie Suriname), and one of the barrels bearing the initials “RBS,” on the left the river god of the Surinam river, with a Dutch three-master in the background.
Measures: H 259 x W 60 x D 35 cm (case)
Diameter 32 cm (clock dial)
This exceptionally rare long-case clock probably was ordered by one of the many wealthy families living along the Amsterdam canals that owned or had shares in plantations in Surinam. It’s a successful marriage of
the work of an accomplished 18th century Amsterdam clockmaker, a Dutch cabinetmaker working with exotic tropical timbers, a woodcarver familiar with both Dutch Rococo design and Surinamese iconography, and
a painter with knowledge, whether first-
hand or through other visualisations, of the Paramaribo waterfront. In the production of this Gesamtkunstwerk, only the name of the clockmaker is known: Nicloaas Weylandt (circa 1700-1754), who had a business situated on the Nieuwendijk near the Haarlemmersluis in Amsterdam from 1742 until his death.
The case is made of imported timbers from Surinam; Rio-palisander and snakewood. A very similar clock-case, veneered in walnut,
is illustrated in J. Zeeman, De Nederlandse staande klok...

Jaeger Lecoultre, Atmos Clock from 1967 with Original Box
Located in Greven, DE
Jaeger LeCoultre Atmos clock
Switzerland
Brass gold plated
Year of manufacture 1967
Dimensions: H x W x D: 22 x 17 x 11 cm
Description:
Atmos VII in gold-plated brass case with black lacquered sides and matt gold brushed dial.
Instead of numbers, we see two double lines for 3, 6, 9 and 12 and single lines for the remaining hours. There is a raised logo below the 12, and the words "JAEGER LECOULTRE" and "ATMOS" above and below the hands. A stamped "Swiss Made" logo is located above the dragonfly.
Serial number: 252201, year of manufacture 1967.
This clock is based on the calibre 528/1 movement and was listed by Jaeger LeCoultre under ref. number 5900. The model was only built from 1967-1970 and is rare to find in the trade today due to its small number of pieces.
The original transport box, the so-called "tabernacle", makes this clock doubly interesting.
Instead of the usually used levelling screws, which are operated from inside the case, the Atmos VII has a wheel each on the left and right outside of the base for levelling.
Condition:
The movement runs absolutely reliable and accurate. The condition of the case is also very nice. The gilding is well preserved. There are minimal traces of cleaning on the dial, barely visible to the naked eye. There are also some rusted screws on the underside of the clock, which is not visible in use.
The photos are not "embellished", the case condition is as shown in the photos.
Points to know:
Although Leonardo da Vinci was already able to prove that the production of a perpetual motion machine is physically impossible, it has been tried again...

Genaro Alvarez Mosaic Glass Tile Cocktail Table Mexico, circa 1955
By Genaro Alvarez
Located in Camden, ME
Classic glass tile mosaic coffee table from the Mexico City Studio of the noted artist Genaro Alvarez dating from the mid-1950s.
There are three different compositional designs in the creation of this mosaic top.
The first is the abstract pictorial of a universe of white, crème and grey surrounding a "Black Hole" with a galaxy of yellow and black swirling along its serpentine "lariat" of a double ended orbit path marked by gold tiles.
The second is the consistent placement of the background tiles in concise repetitive patterns of concentric half circular arcs.
The third is the placement of gold mirrored tiles adding points of sparkle over the entire surface as the intersection points of a grid, a very interesting and sophisticated addition.
The integration of these three design elements adds an unexpected complexity and cohesion to the overall composition.
Genaro Alvarez is recognized as one Mexico's great mid century masters of mosaic design of his era and had an international reputation and clientele with several major architectural installations here in the United States.
From Don Shoemaker dot com.
"One artist that was recognized for his mosaic furniture creations is Genaro Alvarez. The Genaro Alvarez Studio, (located in Mexico City) was known for its mosaic work in murals and floor designs as well as decorative furnishings such as lamps, trays and furniture using various types of natural rocks...
