This Federal mahogany and inlaid tall case clock survives in fine original condition with a pleasing old surface. The "grandfather" clock has an impressive form that emulates the Roxbury forms being produced in Boston. It has same handsome proportion, high quality mahogany, pattern inlays, brass stop fluting and distinctive pierced fretwork found on the best examples from the Willard work shops. The case retains an exceptional old surface and is attributed to the New Hampshire cabinetmaker Michael Carleton. The clock is also accompanied by a documented single family history that includes images of the clock in the family homestead in New Hampshire. It is illustrated in, “Early American Clocks” by Don Maust, E.G Warman Publishing Co, 1971 Page 18. The molded hood is mounted with three fluted chimneys, or plinths, each fitted with period brass ball and spire finials. The chimneys frame a traditional Roxbury type pierced fretwork. The finely painted iron dial is of Boston origins and features a painted moon phase disk in the lunette, decorated with hand painted scenes and moon faces. The clock face, which has Roman numerals to demark the hour and an outer ring of Arabic numerals to demark the minutes, is framed with brightly painted polychrome floral spandrels. The dial is signed below this arbor in neat blocked calligraphy with the makers name “JOHN OSGOOD / HAVERHILL”. The brass, weight driven, time and strike, eight-day movement is engraved with “18” on the front plate, a production number used by Osgood on his movements The movement is in good original condition, has recently been professionally serviced and is in good running order. The base is comprised of a richly figured mahogany panel with a line inlaid border and an inlaid oval fan at center. The double stepped molding transitions to fine ogee bracket feet. The bracket feet have a distinctive cuff at the base which is common to Willard clocks produced in the last part of the 18th Century. Condition:
The clock is in excellent condition with minor typical repairs. The case retains a historic dry old surface which may be original. The dial has minor expected chips at the lower dial feet.
