18th-19th Century Antique Saw Clock, Southern Germany

$2,770.11

About

Miniature ascending saw-clock Southern Germany brass, enamel, wood late 18th, early 19th century Dimensions: height 23 cm, diameter of the base 11 cm Description: Rare small saw clock with only 23 cm height. Running time 24 hours. The ebonized wood base stands on three flat round alabaster feet. Inserted in it is the actual clock base made of mahogany. In the middle of the base is an upright brass tooth bar, the so-called saw, which gives the clock its name. The small (only 4 cm in diameter) enameled dial with Roman numerals is mounted on an artistically engraved round brass arched shield. The gold-plated hands are sawed and filed in the finest handcraft. In front of the clock face swings the forehead pendulum - a so-called front zapper. Saw clocks are generally known for their movements, sometimes weighted down with additional weight, climbing down a rack. The energy for driving the movement is thus supplied by the clock with its own weight. This is called a gravity drive clock. However, the clock offered here is a rare version of the ascending saw watch. To wind it up, it must be pressed down against the tension of a spring. In the course of 24 hours the clock climbs slowly upwards on the saw. Condition: Perfect condition of movement and case. There is no glass cover. You can find more about the interesting subject of saw clocks in the following specialist books: Radko Kyncl - Illustriertes Lexikon der Uhren p. 194 Heuer / Maurice - Europäische Pendeluhren p. 258.
