19th Century Austrian Jewel Encrusted Silver Gilt Clock
About the Item
This jewel-encrusted, silver-gilt antique table clock is an exquisite piece of Viennese craftsmanship. It comprises of a scalloped base, which is raised up on four C-scroll feet, and topped by a crowned circular enameled dial. Flanking the dial are two youths - a young boy on the left and girl on the right - who are happily shown collecting fruit.
The oblong-shaped clock base is formed in silver-gilt with scrolling feet and scalloped edges, typical of the Rococo style of design. Topping this base is the neck of the clock, which is fluted and incised with scaly forms. Above, the dial of the clock is decorated with enamel Roman numerals, and is encased within a glass and silver-gilt case. This case is decorated around its rim by light blue sapphires. The clock face is surmounted by a crown, which sits on top of a bundle of fruits, which are covered with amethysts, pearls, emeralds and sapphires. A young boy, on the left, has climbed a ladder to collect these fruits. He playfully leans back, and flicks back his left leg. He and the young girl, who stands on the base to the right, wear shoes studded with pearls, and clothes adorned with precious jewels. The girl watches the boy and waits to catch the fruits in her dress.
With its gilded silver and abundance of different jewels, this table clock - crafted from such fine materials and with immense skill - is truly a work of luxury and quality.
