About the Item

Rare alabaster clock representing "The abduction of Europa" by Zeus metamorphosed into a bull. Europa, dressed in an antique tunic revealing a breast, is seated on the back of the animal decorated with garlands of flowers and holds in her hand a drape flying in the air. The whole rests on a rectangular base where the gilt bronze dial with Roman numerals is inserted, surrounded by two dolphins in relief. The dial is signed "Alibert A Paris". The myth tells that Europa, Phoenician princess, daughter of Agenor, king of Tyre, while walking on the seashore with her companions, was noticed by Zeus for her beauty. The god decided to transform himself into a bull in order to approach her. Europa, touched by the animal, settled on its back. Zeus took the opportunity to jump towards the sea and kidnap her. Movement revised and in working order.
