About the Item

Brocot–Delettrez Paris Astronomical Clock with Perpetual Calendar, circa 1872–1880 Case: Burl walnut veneer with ebonized moldings, glazed on all four sides, rectangular form with pilasters, stepped plinth base, and mirrored interior. Dimensions: 22" H x 14" W x 10.25" D. Condition: The movement was recently serviced and is sold with a winding key. The Makers: Achille Brocot & Jean-Baptiste Delettrez This clock is signed A. Brocot & J. Delettrez, Paris. Achille Brocot (1817–1878), member of the famed Brocot horological dynasty, partnered with Jean-Baptiste Delettrez (1816–1887) in 1851. Together they became known for producing some of the finest and most complicated French mantel clocks of the 19th century, often incorporating astronomical, perpetual calendar, and skeletonized mechanisms. Their workshop exhibited regularly at the Paris Expositions, earning medals and acclaim for technical innovation. Brocot was especially known for the Brocot suspension (an adjustable pendulum suspension system) and refinements to perpetual calendar mechanisms. Delettrez supplied precision watch movements to the trade. Together they produced clocks sought after by both French and international collectors. Dial & Complications Upper Dial: White enamel, Roman numerals, gilt bezel, Brocot escapement visible through the dial. This is the timekeeping dial, powered by an 8-day movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell. Lower Dial: A multifunctional perpetual calendar and astronomical dial featuring: Date, Day, and Month Indicators (perpetual calendar function) Moonphase Display within a sky reserve Equation of Time / Solar hand (sunrise–sunset indications, allowing the clock to display “true solar time” vs. mean time) Signed Patent, denoting Brocot’s protected mechanism. The double-dial configuration — one for time, one for calendar and astronomy — is characteristic of their finest clocks, known as “skeleton astronomical regulators”. Casework The case is veneered in beautifully figured burl walnut with a rich patina, its four-glass form allowing a clear view of the intricate movement. The architectural design, with applied pilasters and stepped molding, is characteristic of French mantel regulators from the 1870s. The mirrored interior panel behind the pendulum enhances the visual effect of the polished brass works. Dating & Attribution Based on the movement type, dial style, and case form, this example dates to circa 1872–1880, near the peak of the Brocot–Delettrez collaboration. The use of both astronomical and perpetual functions situates this clock at the upper tier of their production. Collecting Significance Clocks of this type were marketed to a highly sophisticated clientele eager for scientific instruments that combined utility with display. Brocot & Delettrez’s perpetual calendar clocks stand among the most desirable 19th-century French timekeepers, ranking alongside Breguet and Leroy in complexity.
