Cifra 3 table clock, design by Gino VALLE for SOLARI UDINE. Numbered series Museum of Modern Art of New York B 0979 ORIGIN Italy PERIOD 60's DESIGNER Gino VALLE Architect, designer and painter, Gino Valle (Udine, 1923-2003) did not want to create mere objects, but was interested in their relationship with man, in their communicative power, in how they modified the environment and space in which they were located. The fundamental aspect of architecture is that it defines a space, builds a perceptive and sensitive experience. Just like the objects that Valle designed. Valle began collaborating with Solari in 1954 on the project for an electromechanical snap-digit clock, Cifra 5developed with his sister Nani Valle, John Myer and the graphic designer Michele Provinciali and awarded the Compasso d'oro in 1956: 4 palettes of 10 numbers to compose all the hours of the day. With the help of the Belgian inventor John Myer, Valle manages to obtain the roller of 40 horizontal vanes which contains numbers and letters (patented in 1966) and in the late 1960s he creates Cifra 3 , the smallest of the direct reading clocks . The second Compasso d'Oro di Valle arrives in 1962 with the alphanumeric remote indicator for airports and railway stations"for the intensity of the design solution which results in an extraordinary simplicity and aesthetic-signage evidence". Installed in the TWA Terminal of JF Kennedy airport in New York, the Valle remote indicator was enclosed in an unmistakable oval shell designed by Eero Saarinen completely covered with white tesserae created by the famous mosaic artists of the Spilimbergo school (PN). If for Valle design was the language of objects, Cifra 3 is its maximum expression: it marks time and narrates its incessant flow through the movement of the palettes.
