Clock on the Desk, 19th Century, Napoleon III Period

About the Item

Patriotic French 19th century ormolu bronze eagle standing on a globe malachite mantel clock. The eagle is a symbol of power as well as a recognizable sign of the Empire style. The design of the Empire period was often characterized by militaristic elements – symbols of war and victory, imperial emblems, such as the golden eagle. The figure of the eagle is sculpted with spread wings, as if it was preparing to fly. Beneath the eagle is a malachite globe shaped dial, which contain Roman numerals for hours, snake’s head for hours hand and snake’s tail for minute hand. The globe is supported on an ormolu cloud-like swirling surface. The plinth is made with rich green malachite in a rectangular case. The mid-section of the base is framed with ormolu framing ledge. The front of the plinth contains a drawer compartment decorated on the outside with anthemion motif and a rosette handle. The mantel clock is supported with gilded bronze scroll anthemion styled feet. The clock is in excellent and perfect working condition. In addition, it has been cleaned and maintained by a professional watchmaker specializing in museum maintenance. The eight-days going movement. It strikes the every, half hour and hour on it’s bell.
