About the Item

A most delightful and high quality French 19th century Louis XVI st. white Carrara marble and Ormolu clock, signed by Mathieu Planchon. This stunning clock is raised by six finely chased topie shaped Ormolu bun feet below a two step Carrara marble podium decorated with Ormolu rosettes, musical instruments, and berried laurel decorations. At the front center of the podium is an Ormolu plaque displaying charming cherubs studying below a wreath of berried laurel garlands leading up to a fluted marble column supporting the clock's face. The enameled dial above is frame within an elegant Ormolu bevel and showcases wonderful Arabic and Roman numerals, Ormolu hands, and signed Planchon a Paris. Flanking the clock face are two stunning maidens partially covered by flowing robes and holding long floral garlands overflowing from a chalice at the top of the clock. The rear of the clock features a glass porthole allowing access to the clock's mechanism. *Available with complementary urns item# 14335, sold separately. Mathieu Planchon (1842–1921) was a renowned French clockmaker and horologist known for his expertise in antique timepieces and historical restorations. He played a key role in preserving France’s horological heritage, notably restoring the 16th-century astronomical clock at Beauvais Cathedral and documenting early clockmaking techniques.

A spectacular and very important French early 19th century Louis XVI st. white Carrara marble and ormolu clock by Raingo Frères. The clock is raised by elegant topie shaped feet with fine wrap around berried laurel bands below the white Carrara marble base with rounded sides decorated with richly chased pierced intertwined berried laurel and blooming flower bands, and a finely detailed central plaque depicting charming cherubs playing musical instruments. Above are two exquisite patinated bronze maidens sitting on a mottled support with lovely foliate designs each draped in wonderfully executed garments and holding a wreath and flowers with a charming winged cherub extending his arms up. At the center is the elegant enameled dial with Arabic hour numerals amidst lovely floral garlands and numbers indicating the date at the border with delicate pierced ormolu hands with a remarkable pieced foliate design at the back.
