George II Parcel-Gilt Scarlet-Japanned Chinoiserie Table Clock by William Creak

About the Item

This English George II period 18th century table clock consists in a scarlet-japanned and parcel-gilt rectangular case with elaborate chinoiserie decoration and pierced frets to the sides. Resting on a molded base with a shaped apron and bracket feet, the case presents an inverted bell top with a brass fold-down handle flanked by four vase-shaped finials as well as a foliate engraved backplate. The door opens on a break arch brass dial featuring a Roman chapter ring with Arabic minutes, nicely laid out with gilt foliate corner spandrels and a subsidiary strike/silent dial within the arch. The matted centre presents a date aperture as well as the signature of the well-known British clockmaker William Creak in a cartouche. This clock was designed around 1760 when European craftsmen, influenced by the imported silk and lacquerware from China, created their own fanciful versions of the East. The characteristic Rococo style of this superb George II parcel-gilt and scarlet-japanned table clock, with its exquisite chinoiserie motifs of magots among landscapes, hoho birds and traditional houses, would instantly add a sense of history and travel to any room.

Born during the third quarter of the 18th century, this English mahogany table features a circular tilt-top with pie-crust edge, resting on a bird-cage mechanism. Tripod tables were often used as tea tables, the tilt-tops allowing them to be folded and stored away easily. Our table is raised on a lovely baluster stem, adorned with a spirally turned motif. Creating a perfect conclusion to this elegant ensemble, the table rests on three Rococo cabriole legs, accented with acanthus leaves surrounding a central medallion on the knees, and ending in ball-and-claw feet.
