Period French Art Deco Glass & Metal Clock by Sabino

About the Item

This fine period French clock was manufactured by the Sabino firm most likely before 1935. It prominently features two female nude figures lounging on either side of the inset silvered clock topped by a deco stylized garden of roses. This glass panel is then set into a two-toned silver and gold patinated brass framework creating the base. The glass is signed Sabino and Paris. The clock will wind and run but stops soon after and seems to need some attention to cleaning or adjusting the mechanism. It has no chips or cracks to the glass. Born in Sicily in 1878, Marius Ernest Sabina and his family moved to France while he was still a boy. Encouraged by his father, a sculptor in wood, he was trained to follow the family tradition. He was educated at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Decoratifs and then went on to the Beaux Arts de Paris. Here he became especially interested in the advent of electric light and its impact on decorative lighting. By 1925 he had developed his signature glass with an iridescent blue color though he worked in clear and other colors as well. In 1927 he was hired to produce lighting for the French liner Isle de France and in 1935 he created the famous glass lighted fountain for the Normandy. His impact on lighting was monumental and he designed his lights so that the glass became the decorative element instead of the decorative detail. His clients, famous and important personages, included Josephine Baker, the Sha of Persia, Maurice Chevalier and Indian Mahrashas. After the close of the Second World War, he continued to produce old works but introduced no new material. This clock comes from the collection of Auther and Teddy Edelman.
