About the Item

Table clock in full Radical Memphis style, produced in the early 1980s, postmodern, made of lacquered metal, with white dial on black background. Designer's signature visible on the dial. It is part of a stock of clocks from a store depot that was closed decades ago and miraculously unearthed again. The various layers of geometric background emphasize the shapes, giving movement and special geometry to the object, thus becoming not a simple clock but a special collectible and design object. Measures about 13 cm. high and 20 cm. wide, depth 12 cm. In another listing, you can find an equal model in green and black color. Very good condition, may have some signs of age. The genesis of Memphis was rooted in the experimental approach to industrial design that Ettore Sottsass and Michele De Lucchi had pursued in the late 1970s during their experience within Studio Alchimia and their contemporary proximity to radical design concepts. The actual collective was born from an informal meeting organized by Sottsass in his Milan home on December 11, 1980, to generally discuss new forms of expression related to design; along with De Lucchi, colleagues Aldo Cibic, Matteo Thun, Marco Zanini, and Martine Bedin participated in the invitation. Together, they decided to create a working group as a reaction to the style that had characterized the design of the 1970s, which was very minimalist, considered to have no personality, and marked by a glossy look as well as lackluster colors, black above all.
