About the Item
Rare shipboard chronometer signed D. Mc GREGOR & C Makers To The Admiralty Glasgow &, Greenock F 3078 housed in a beautiful rosewood case with brass threads, second half of the 19th century, 56-hour charge.
Elegant original rosewood case with double lid, retractable handles, threads, hinges, retractable handles, and corner guards are brass, as well as its original key. On the outside on the lid and above the opening key is a mother-of-pearl label engraved with the manufacturer's name and chronometer number written on it. Inside the case is housed the chronometer mounted on gimbal suspension locked by a screw lever. The chronometer movement is contained in a brass case and enclosed inside by a glass crown; the chronometer case is fixed on a gimbal to give stability and flatness to the instrument. The 56-hour charge is given to the chronometer via the original brass key, housed inside the box. The dial is silver metal, the hands are in gold and the hours in Roman numerals, seconds are marked by a small dial at the bottom, and a second dial at the top indicates the winding status of the watch.
Very good condition, slightly damaged navy blue velvet crumpled lining the inside of the cover, fully functional.
Case measurements 18x18x19.5 cm - inches 7.1x7.1x7.8.
The last photo is the gift box.
Duncan McGregor began his business in Greenock in 1836, and in 1844 opened an office glasgow. From 1856 onward it became known as D. McGregor & Co. They were opened other locations came to Liverpool in 1879 and London in 1886. The firm specialized in the construction of nautical and optical instruments
In the early 1700s, the problem aboard ships inherent in calculating longitude, basically the distance along a parallel from a meridian of reference, and consequently the ship's position, nagged all mariners. In the eyes of the men of the eighteenth century, the world looked very far from what atlases, globes and photographs taken by satellites have made us familiar, and there were no counting the Captains who, with their Sailors, had lost their lives because their ships had broken up on the rocks of a coast that, according to the miscalculations of their pilots, should not have been there.
The nautical chronometer was invented after years of work by John Harrison (1693-1776) and was one of the greatest technological achievements of all time. The stopwatch capable of telling the exact time on a ship did in fact make it possible to solve the great and unsolved problem of calculating longitude on the sea. In the 15th century, the development of ocean navigation and the resulting discoveries of new lands gave enormous impetus to world trade, and the ability to navigate safely became of vital importance to all seafaring nations. It took more than two centuries to arrive at the final solution to the problem represented by the precise calculation of longitude.
Trivia:
Chronometers were produced: one in 1737, which was tested on board in 1763. In 1859 England's owned 750, of which 610 were on board ships, 80 were under repair and 60 were on delivery. Production in 1889 is about 300 per year.
France in 1768 had two and in 1832 143 instead.
The first stopwatch in America was not produced until 1942. America, engaged in World War II, decided to mass-produce them through Hamilton and Elgin Watch Co. under license from Switzerland's Ulisse Nardin. In a single month, more chronometers are built than were produced in a year worldwide delivered in 1942 itself: 8902 for the Navy, 1,500 for the Navy Commission, 500 for the Army and Air Force, 2170 for the navies of other nations.
