About the Item

Early 19th century gilt and patinated bronze mantel clock. A young woman is seated on a shell that displays the clock dial, with Roman numerals for hours. Two swans pull the shell and Cupid on a dolphin push it. The set rests on a rectangular base decorated with a scene depicting Jupiter and Juno surrounded by Mercury, Bacchus, Neptune, Apollo, and Diane. The base is finely sculpted with a garland of interlacing above four scrolled feet. Original clockwork is cleaned and in working condition. An identical ormolu clock is reproduced in: Elke NichŸser, French bronze clocks 1780-1830, a study of a figural image, Munich, 1999, p. 242, n¡ 937, et Hans Ottomeyer, Peter Proschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, p. 355, fig. 5.9.5. Our clock features a scene from Phaedra (originally Phaedra and Hippolytus), a dramatic tragedy written by Jean Racine, first performed in 1677. With Phaedra, Racine again pulled his subject matter from Greek mythology. In Racine’s retelling of the myth, King Theseus has been absent for a long time, and as a result, Phaedra declares her love to Hippolytus, who is the son of her royal husband from a previous marriage. When Theseus becomes aware of this, he is convinced that Hippolytus attempted to take Phaedra by force, so Theseus banishes Hippolytus. He then invokes the god Neptune, who has promised to grant any wish of Theseus, to avenge him by bringing about his son’s death. Shortly afterward, Hippolytus’s departing chariot is interrupted by a terrifying horned monster rising from the sea. Hippolytus wounds the beast mortally, but its death throes drive his horses into a wild frenzy. In their flight, the chariot is dashed against the rocks and Hippolytus is dragged helplessly to his death. Several artists have depicted the story of Phaedra and Hippolytus. A marble group, Hippolytus’s death, was created around 1715 by Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne. It in the Louvre Museum in Paris. Joseph-Desire Court (1797-1865) painted Hippolytus’s death in 1825, a sketch of which is in the Fabre Museum in Montpellier. circa 1820. Dimenison: W 2.3 in, D 5.9in, H 22 in.
