About the Item

Tall case Amsterdam clock. Signed Pieter Verlaer, Dutch, circa 1840-1860. walnut and burled walnut. Clock has an amazing dial with three ships that move in consort with the pendulum. Pieter Verlaer was a Dutch clockmaker who was at the top of his trade from 1840 until 1869. During this time, he specialized in making Amsterdam clocks in the traditional 18th century manner for wealthy diamond merchants and traders of Chinese porcelain in Amsterdam. Our Verlaer clock is exquisitely crafted and entirely original, having been beautifully cared for, for over 130 years. It was sold at auction in Harleem (just outside of Amsterdam) in 1951 to a Mr. Gielen in Velp from Arnhem. It remained in his family’s possession until it was purchased from them privately by one of our agents in the Netherlands. It has been gracing our home for the last decade.
