About the Item
Rare small alcove clock entirely decorated with Boulle marqueterie and ormolu gilt bronze friezes. French work
of the beginning of Louis XV's reign around 1730.
Shaped like a violin, our alcove clock, called a cartel, features a particularly fine decoration of scrolls and
acanthus leaves according to Jean Bérain.
The bottom of the case features a trompe l'oeil perspective simulating the flooring of a palace.
The upper part is dome-shaped.
Rich ornamentation of finely chiseled and gilded original ormolu bronzes including two figures of cherubs with scythes symbolizing the passage of time.
The dial is finely chiseled and engraved brass, with twelve white enamel cartouches indicating hours in Roman numerals.
Original three-bell movement, silk thread suspension.
On-demand chime with lanyard for hours, halves and quarters.
Dial and movement back signed "Fiacre Clement à Paris. "*
Upon request, the watch is delivered fully functional after overhaul by our watchmaker.
Phiacre Clement (died in Paris in 1758).
Figure among the most important Parisian watchmakers of the first half of the 18th century.
After his consecration as master watchmaker on January 16, 1714, he enjoyed great fame and established his workshop, around the mid-1840s, on the rue Saint-Denis (see Tardy,
Dictionary of French Watchmakers, Paris, 1971, p. 131).
Two of his sons, Fiacre François and Claude, continued their father's workshop business until the beginning of Louis XVI's reign.
