Mahogany Coffin Wall Alarm Clock by Elnathan Taber Roxbury, Massachusetts c1810
About the Item
This rare mahogany Coffin Clock was made by Elnathan Taber of Roxbury, Massachusetts, c. 1810. Features include-
Case: arched swan neck pediment with turned wooden
finial over full-length hinged door with glazed dial and
pendulum aperture, and gilded escutcheon.
Dial: the cream painted dial with black Arabic numerals
and blued steel moon hands and alarm pointer.
Movement: eight day weight driven movement with anchor
escapement and alarm, striking a bell. The dovetailed case with full-length door, glazed opening for the 7 3/4-in. painted iron, the weight tin reads, "Warranted by E. Taber Union Street Roxbury Massachusetts." The eight-day time and detached alarm movements, the time movement with step train and through bolt attachment to the case, pendulum suspended by a "T-bridge" and two period lead weights."
