A Miniature Two Train Vienna Regulator

About the Item

A rare wedge shaped laterndluhr Vienna regulator with a two train weight driven movement of exceptional quality. The eight day movement strikes the hours on a spiral gong and is powered by two brass bound weights. This beautiful miniaturised example of a Viennese type movement has all the elements of its larger counterparts, including a pull repeat lever and elongated deadbeat escapement, and the pendulum is suspended from the case on a knife edge pivot. The crisp white enamel dial signed W. Blätterbauer, Fünfkirche, has a gilded engraved surround with roman numerals and blued steel hands. The case is made of ebonised fruit wood with contrasting string inlay with glazed front and sides surmounted but a pediment top. This clock dates from the 1830’s, made in Fünfkirche, now know as Pécs in Hungary, during the Austro-Hungarian Empire and is rare due its size and shape, as well as unusually being a more complex striking movement rather than a timepiece. This clock is shown unserviced, and will need to be overhauled before shipping please allow 4 weeks before delivery in order for us to ensure the clock is in perfect working order, this clock comes with our two year guarantee.

In the noted horology book "Britten's Old Clocks and Watches", G.H. Baillie defines a Grand Sonnerie movement as follows: "A form of quarter-striking in which the hour last struck is also repeated at each hour." It works like this, striking the quarter-hour on one gong and the hour on a second, slightly lower-toned gong: At 3:15 the clock strikes once on the higher chime to indicate the quarter hour, followed by three strikes on the lower chime to indicate the hour. At 3:30 the clock strikes two times on the higher chime (half-hour), followed by three chimes on the lower gong (hour). This way, if you are within hearing distance of the clock, day or night, you can tell exactly what time it is at each quarter hour A "petite sonnerie...
