The Royal Exchange Clock

About the Item

Undoubtedly one of the finest creations of the renowned Brockbank brothers clockmakers, this extraordinary early 19th-century Georgian grand wall clock was crafted for display at the Royal Exchange, London's famed stock trading floor. The grand mahogany case was expertly decorated with stunning gilt Royal Arms, laurel wreath ornamentation, tassels and lifelike leaves at the corners. The cream-painted metal dial, inscribed with the words "The Royal Exchange," is further elevated by rare pierced gilt Roman numerals, creating a truly breathtaking timepiece. The clock emulates a design by Sir William Chambers, the personal architect to King George III, who was commissioned to design a table clock as the centerpiece of the king's grand sitting area. He incorporated the king's favored Franco-Roman style, with ribbon-tied palms, laurel wreaths and a lion figurine, a signature motif of King George III. Crafting a table clock in the style of a royally commissioned timepiece was regarded as a great achievement for a clockmaker. For the Brockbank brothers, who were renowned for their horological innovations like the spring detent escapement and modernizations of marine chronometers, this task was a rare and deeply personal undertaking. The result of their venture was this magnificent clock that both paid homage to Sir William Chambers' original and incorporated the Brockbank brothers' unique horological innovations. The Brockbank brothers' unique combination of scientific innovation and refined craftsmanship allowed them to create one-of-a-kind treasures that were highly sought after by some of Europe's most prestigious clients, including members of the royal family. John Brockbank, the elder brother, was a master of horology and metalworking and was responsible for creating all of the mechanical components of their clocks, often using a combination of gilt and engraving techniques. William Brockbank, the younger brother, was a virtuosic enamel painter and skilled architect who designed the cases and dials for their clocks. In addition to their royal commissions, the brothers received numerous prestigious awards for their innovations, including the Longitude Prize. Several of the Brockbank brothers' horological treasures, though simpler than this clock, can be found in the permanent collections of renowned institutions from the British Museum in London to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Clocks made for display at the Royal Exchange building are rare and coveted reminders of the historic legacy and ongoing importance of the Royal Exchange in London's commercial history. Circa 1800.

This magnificent English longcase, or grandfather, clock boasts a fine rosewood case inlaid with an intricate, balanced design. The face is crafted of chased silver in a foliate motif with fully hallmarked numerals by London silversmith James Stedstone Gouldsmith. The clock is a three-train movement run by three silver-plated weights and a mercury pendulum. The three weights power the time, the hour chime and the quarter-hour chime, and the clock strikes on nine tubular bells with a choice of either Whittington or Westminster chimes.
