About the Item

This is a lovely traditional English Victorian wall clock with an oak wood case. This style of clocks were often seen in large public places such as banks, schools and train stations. This particular time piece has been carefully cleaned and restored. A great British antique! James and Stephen Tree began making clocks in the 1830s and in 1847 moved from Old Kent Road to 121 Great Dover Street, London SE1 - very close to Tower Bridge Road. The full diameter of the clock is 33.5cm, the clock face itself is 24.5cm.

This beautiful wall clock was made by Thwaites and Reed in the late 19th century. The case is mahogany and numbered 118 with a small ivorine plaque - these clocks were made for establishments such as the Inns of Court and the Bank of England in London. The electromagnetic movement is regulated by a large, slowly oscillating bi-metallic balance wheel, with the correct battery these clock will run for the duration of the battery life.
