"Zodiac Clock, " Spectacular Art Deco Sculptural Clock in Wrought Iron and Copper

About the Item

One of the most unusual and spectacular Art Deco pieces we have ever offered, this large Art Deco clock is composed of fer forgé or wrought iron and copper, all hand hammered and formed, with a central clock face surrounded by open work featuring the symbols of each of the Zodiac signs. The artisanry is extraordinary, and though it is not marked, it is clearly a French piece of the highest order. The clock can be displayed as a table top piece or a mantle clock, but is also designed to hang on a wall. The winding key survives, and is included with the clock.

Art deco clock circa 1920 in wrought iron with floral decoration of very beautiful manufacture. Stamped Fag for Ferronnerie D'art des Galleries (Galeries Laffayette) directed by Marcel Vasseur. Marble base. In perfect condition. The movement works but has not been serviced. Height: 29cm Width: 40cm Depth: 14cm Weight: 10 Kg The Galeries Lafayette department store on Boulevard Haussmann in Paris was inaugurated in October 1912. Soon, it became the second most visited monument in Paris, after the Eiffel Tower. In 1922, the Galeries Lafayette department store opened the "La Maîtrise" applied art studios run by the decorator Maurice Dufrêne, who became its artistic director. The vocation of these workshops is to produce "works" (furniture, fabrics, rugs, wallpapers, ceramics, etc.) within the reach of all (well almost). The decorators and twin brothers Jean and Jacques Adnet, are among the first collaborators. An ironwork section is created under the name of Ferronnerie d'Art Des Galeries. Talented ironworkers participate, such as Marcel Vasseur, who created the ironwork of La Maîtrise Pavilion at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts...
