About the Item

Antique Mahogany Brass bound Captain's writing box containing three secret compartments, one for sovereigns, and a special key to secure the box down from rough travel or thieves. Has flush fitting campaign side handles a pair of candle sconces, a reading rail and inkwells. With screw-mounted brass strapping and corner brackets for added strength. With a vacant initial plate and escutcheon. Opening the Captain's Military writing box reveals its dark baize writing surface with two silver-plated inkwells and a pen tray with a small compartment to the left which houses two candle sconces. The right-hand edge of the open box has a large cut-steel key housed inside the box. This key is used on the turndown screws to secure the writing box to surfaces to make sure it's secure during transit. Each half of the writing surface can be lifted. The lower half has a storage space and a removable reading rail which can be placed on the top of the box and can be opened at an angle using the brass lectern. The upper half of the writing slope can be lifted to reveal storage space where you can access the secret compartments. There is a two-compartment tray with ribbon handles to aid in removal. Once the tray is removed the base pin of one of the candle sconces can be used to press a false screw on the top right-hand bracket. This will cause a false wall to spring forward revealing three small drawers with bone handles. With the false wall removed the base of the storage space can be slid towards the front of the box, this will cause it to spring upwards and reveal another secret storage space. However, the secrets don't end here! There are two sovereign trays and three more hidden drawers at the base of this secret compartment. Each can be accessed by pressing on the top left and bottom right side walls. This magnificent captain's writing box comes with fully working locks and tasselled keys.
