About the Item

Desk Set with Hare and Barrels Origin: Probably Germany or France Material: Patinated and partially gilt bronze Date: Late 19th century (c. 1880–1900) Dimensions: H × W × D: approx. 7.0 × 10.0 × 10.0 cm Description: Small desk set made of patinated bronze with partial gilding. The ensemble consists of two barrels of differing sizes, decorated with relief-carved wood grain, and a rectangular tray with raised, folded corners. At the side sits a naturalistically modelled hare with upright ears and finely detailed fur. The interior of both barrels is gilded and each shows a small drilled hole—likely for ventilation, suggesting use as a match holder or strike-light container. The small tray was presumably intended for storing matches, paperclips, or other small desk items. Interesting Facts: Miniature desk sets of this kind were a popular part of decorative bronze craftsmanship in the late 19th century. Combining functional elements with sculptural detail, they exemplify a period in which even utilitarian objects were imbued with artistic value. The rustic imagery—barrels, hare, and tray—was deliberately chosen and reflects an idealised vision of rural life, conceived as a counterpoint to the growing industrial culture. Condition: Gilding rubbed, patina with age-related oxidation spots.
