About the Item

Dating to the Victorian Period Circa 1850 From our Writing Box collection, we are pleased to offer this Victorian Coromandel Writing Box. The Writing Box of rectangular shape veneered to the exterior in exotic Coromandel wood with double brass stringing. The front and lid feature a scene of floral sprigs in Mother of Pearl with large blossoming flower heads. When opened the box reveals the writing slope surface with a gold tooled border and embossed outer border. Each brass hinge is intricately engraved to the surface elevating the quality of the box. Each half of the writing slope lifts to allow access to storage compartments below with writing accompaniments storage to the top beside two inkwells, all lined in Mahogany. The Writing Box features a secret compartment with hidden push button access (see photos). The secret compartment is accessed by removing the right hand side inkwell and pushing down the surface, this releases a section of wood from below the upper writing slope revealing three small drawers. The Writing Box dates to the middle of the 19th century during the Victorian period circa 1850. The Writing Box comes complete with working lock and tasselled key. Coromandel is a valuable wood found in India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It has a contrasting hazel-brown colour with black grain. It is a dense, heavy wood that is so popular it has been logged to extinction over the last few hundred years. This makes Calamander pieces even more special. Mahogany is the name given to many types of tropical hardwood and can be found in Africa, India and South America, most of which are a red-brown colour with a fine, even grain. This makes it easily workable and gives it a durable finish which attributes to its popularity with many kinds of furniture. Mother of Pearl is an organic-inorganic composite material produced by some molluscs as an inner shell layer. It is the same material that natural pearls are made from and is desirable due to its strong and resilient makeup along with its beautiful iridescent shimmer. Victorian, an era of British History corresponding approximately with the reign of Queen Victoria from the 20th of June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901 however, there are arguments stating that the Victorian era is actually from 1820 until 1914 proceeded by Georgian era and followed by the Edwardian era.
