About Khatam Artwork: Khatam is a Persian version of marquetry, art forms made by decorating the surface of wooden articles with delicate pieces of wood, metal and other natural substances precisely-cut geometrical shapes. "Khatam" art, also known as "Khatamkari" or "Gol-o-Morgh," is a traditional Persian woodworking technique and form of marquetry that involves creating intricate geometric patterns using small pieces of wood, metal, bone, and sometimes even precious materials like mother-of-pearl. These materials are carefully cut, shaped, and then fitted together to form complex designs that are often found on various decorative items. The word "Khatam" in Persian means "to finish" or "to complete," and it refers to the meticulous and precise craftsmanship involved in creating these patterns. Khatam art has a long history in Persian culture and can be found on a wide range of objects, including jewelry boxes, furniture, picture frames, and musical instruments, among others. The art of Khatamkari requires a high level of skill and attention to detail, as craftsmen must select and arrange the materials to form symmetrical and harmonious designs. The resulting patterns often feature star-like shapes, polygons, and intricate tessellations, which are then used to embellish various items, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication to Persian art and craftsmanship.

In 1932, Pietro Chiesa was asked by Gio Ponti to share in the artistic direction of the newborn FontanaArte, a role that would enable him to give full expression to his creative flair by designing over a thousand different objects (furniture, tables, lamps, glass windows, objets d’art etc). Some of these pieces took their place in the history of design and are still produced by FontanaArte today, such as the Fontana curved table (1932), the Cartoccio vase (1932) and the Luminator floor lamp (1933).
