Wax Seal Impressions in Turned Lignum Vitae Boxes
About the Item
All seven of these red sealing wax impressions are housed in nicely turned lignum vitae boxes with screw on lids. The boxes range in diameter from 29 mm (1.14 inches) to 63 mm (2.5 inches) and are around 10-16 mm (3/8ths inch - 5/8ths inch) thick. The wax impressions record the crests, insignia and mottoes of Viscount Chetwynd, the Marquess of Tweeddale, and Baron Seaford of Sussex, amongst others. The smaller impressions were probably made by signet rings.
Inside the lids of three of the boxes are the engravers labels. The largest one carries a very detailed example of the engravers art and the name and address of the engraver, Henry Wiegall of 3 St. James's St London. Weigall was a member of the Royal Society of Arts, later emigrating to Australia in 1856 and dying there in 1882.
The middle size label is for Halfhide & Co. of Coventry St London. According to his label, George Halfhide was "seal engraver to His Majesty, and the Dukes of York, Cumberland and Sussex". Later on he was the official engraver to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
The smallest one is a printed silk label for Fisher, Braithwaite & Jones Jewellers, Cockspur St London. This partnership started in around 1823, and was dissolved on the 29th of September 1829, with Braithwaite and Jones continuing the business.
Four of the boxes have some slight damage and because they are so thin, six of the seals have cracks. Three are cracked right through, but are held together by the backing paper.
They would all date from 1820 to 1840.
