Chinese Qing Dynasty Porcelain Spotted Deer Brush Washer, Mid-19th Century
About the Item
A charming and elegant Chinese brush washer in the form of a recumbent spotted deer, Qing dynasty, circa 1850.
The graceful animal modeled with legs folded under its body, head turned, a sprig of lingzhi (the fungus of immortality) in its mouth. The body of the deer glazed a light brown with raised white spots and a textured white patch on the neck. The short antlers and hooves glazed black, the sprig of lingzhi picked out in blue.
The body of the deer is hollow, with a large opening shaped as a ruyi or lingzhi on its back, indicating this piece was most likely used as a brush washer on the desk of a Chinese scholar.
Deer hold special significance to the Chinese, and are often portrayed in art. The word for deer, lu, is a homophone for prosperity, while the animal itself is associated with longevity, shown often as an attendant to the Bodhisattva Guanyin or the Taoist deity Shouxing. Taken together, the animal often connotes wishes for a long and prosperous life.
