About the Item

Inkwell in red Griotte marble and gilt bronze representing an allegory of writing by Henri Chapu (1833-1891). This old 19th century inkstand is composed of a penholder hollowed out of the marble and two cups with their gilt bronze covers. The marble is enhanced by a decoration of gilded bronzes with laurel garlands, torus and buttons. The interior of the cups is made of translucent glass. In the center of the inkwell, a bas-relief in bronze with a black patina, finely sculpted, depicting a young nude woman, seated, holding a quill in her right hand and a manuscript in her left hand. This figure illustrating the allegory of writing is signed at the bottom right "Henri CHAPU".
