Majolica Rams Head English Decorated Partners Desk Stand with Inkwells

About the Item

A very stylish English majolica pottery partners desk stand with inkwells with ram heads by renowned maker William Brownfield and dating from around 1870. The rectangular shaped desk stand sits raised on four scallop shell molded feet with a central raised grotesque dolphin handle with inkwells to either side. The stand has pen recesses to two sides with a nib recess to the centre. The inkwells are applied in relief with ram’s heads and floral applications and both have their original domed covers with small loop handles. The stand is hand painted in typical majolica colors of lilac, brown, blue, green, yellow and pink with pink to the inner inkwells and yellow to the base. The desk stand is not marked however is a rare example and a wonderful display piece. Provenance: acquired from the British Art market. In good presentable honest condition without restoration. The handle has an old riveted strapwork repair, one inkwell has been damaged and repaired and the other has a small chip to the top edge. One cover has chips to the underside of the rim with minor chips to both lid handles and one handle has been reattached with some hairlines and damage to the cover. Most is visible only on very close inspection and the ink stand displays well.

    Repaired: In good presentable honest condition without restoration. The handle has an old riveted strapwork repair, one inkwell has been damaged and repaired and the other has a small chip to the top edge. One cover has chips to the underside of the rim with m. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor structural damages.
