About the Item

This is a magnificent antique Victorian inlaid black walnut and mahogany writing slope and stationery box compendium, circa 1860 in date, and bearing the name of the renowned box maker and retailer Drew & Sons, of Piccadilly Circus, London. The top lifts up to reveal a tiered series of compartments for writing paper, envelopes and other stationery items, while the writing slope folds down and releases a compartment that slides out on a hidden spring with a pair of ink bottles and a recess for pens. There are further compartments for pens and papers and it features the original inset burgundy leather with gilt tooling. It has wonderful foliate marquetry inlaid deoration on the front, the domed lid and on the interior. This is a highly decorative piece which will make a statement once placed on any period desk. Condition: In excellent original untouched condition, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 24 x width 32 x depth 18 Dimensions in inches: Height 9 inches x width 1 foot, 1 inch x depth 7 inches Drew & Sons, Piccadilly Circus, London. Drew & Sons was founded by John Drew, married Mary Summers and one of their sons was Samuel Summers Drew. The firm started in 1844 when John Drew was 20, and thus not of age under British law at that time. It seems likely, therefore, that he got his father who was a glover in Maidenhead to be the legal founder of the business. His name was Samuel Drew. John Drew apprenticed as a display cabinet maker and he used to bang his head on the pillow four times so he would wake up at 4 am. He used the time to make cabinets on his own account and so had enough money to start his business when his apprenticeship was over. The British business was sold in the 1930s, the last vestiges of it as a business was on the door of a silversmiths in Upper Audley Street, Mayfair which had the words "Incorporating Drew and Sons".
