Magnifying glasses are already recorded as far back as the Ancient Greeks. Troughout history they were reserved for scientists, nobility and monks. During the Renaissance and culminating in the Industrial revolution a wider public became interested in science and understanding nature. Curiosity cabinets led to the first museums and one of the essential objects in this scolarly atmosphere were lenses and magnifying glasses.
This wonderful 19th century Italian example has good proportions and is made from solid walnut and ebonized softwood. Its dimensions are 56 x 25 cm or 22.4 x 9.8 inches.
