Judith Via Wolff Dichroic Paperweight, Glows in UV, New York Studio Art Glass
About the Item
Vintage art glass paperweight features an abstract biomorphic central design element in blue glass with metallic pigments, raising from the bottom and forming a mountain-like shape. Controlled air bubbles add an illusion of movement and guide the eye upwards along the lines of the structure; dichroic glass is used to create a layer of stars above the structure, and the central structure of fused colored and dichroic glass is encased in clear glass in sommerso technique. Clear glass glows in UV light, indicating the presence of uranium in the formulation, and adding to a visually stunning presentation in UV light case, if desired.
The piece is signed and dated by the artist in etching on the bottom.
Dichroic glass is a type of glass that displays multiple colors when viewed from different angles. This unique material is created by coating glass with multiple micro-layers of metallic oxides, such as titanium, chromium, and aluminum, that are applied using a vacuum deposition process which allows for precise control over the thickness and composition of each layer. The modern form of dichroic glass was developed in the mid-20th century by NASA scientists for use in space shuttles; it was called “dichroic” for its ability to reflect certain wavelengths of light while allowing others to pass through.
Judith Via-Wolff is an established Western New York glass artist, who was working in VIA Glass Art studio in Rochester, NY, in 1980s-1990s.

Roman Erlikh
Roman Erlikh is a professional woodworker with over 20 years’ experience. Roman Erlikh Studio creates bespoke and limited edition contemporary furniture and art objects. His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.

Rare Op Art paperweight was hand blown in elongated ovoid shape. The colored rounded central gather has evenly distributed swirls of blue glass with randomly added yellow pigment placed in abstract, graphic pattern, with the whole structure enclosed in clear glass in sommerso technique.
