About the Item

This is a lovely antique English Victorian gilt bronze picture frame, circa 1870 in date. The shaped frame features highly detailed engraved decoration with twin doors which open to reveal a rectangular recess for your photo. The back is engraved with the following inscription: "Surgeon Major R C Lever, 7th Hussars from H.R.H. the Duke of Connaught" Prince Arthur, the Duke of Connaught, was Queen Victoria's son. This unusual piece is highly collectable and is sure to get noticed wherever it is displayed. Condition: It is in excellent original condition. Dimensions in cm: Height 23 x Width 24 x Depth 16 Dimensions in inches: Height 9 inches x Width 9 inches x Depth 6 inches Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn KG KT KP GCB GCSI GCMG GCIE GCVO GBE VD TD ADC(P) PC (Arthur William Patrick Albert; 1 May 1850 – 16 January 1942) was a member of the British Royal Family who served as the Governor General of Canada, the tenth since Canadian Confederation. Born the seventh child and third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Arthur was educated by private tutors before entering the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich at the age of 16. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the British Army, where he served for some 40 years, seeing service in various parts of the British Empire. During this time he was also created a royal Duke, becoming the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, as well as the Earl of Sussex. In 1911, he was appointed as Governor General of Canada, replacing the Earl Grey as viceroy. He occupied this post until being succeeded by the Duke of Devonshire in 1916. Given his military background, the selection of Arthur proved to be prudent[citation needed], as he acted as the King's, and thus the Canadian Commander-in-Chief's, representative through the first years of the First World War. After the end of his viceregal tenure, Arthur returned to the United Kingdom and there, as well as in India, performed various royal duties, while also again taking up military duties. Though he retired from public life in 1928, he continued to make his presence known in the army well into the Second World War, before his death in 1942. He was Queen Victoria's last surviving son. Ormolu - (from French 'or moulu', signifying ground or pounded gold) is an 18th-century English term for applying finely ground, high-carat gold in a mercury amalgam to an object of bronze.The mercury is driven off in a kiln leaving behind a gold-coloured veneer known as 'gilt bronze'. The manufacture of true ormolu employs a process known as mercury-gilding or fire-gilding, in which a solution of nitrate of mercury is applied to a piece of copper, brass, or bronze, followed by the application of an amalgam of gold and mercury. The item was then exposed to extreme heat until the mercury burned off and the gold remained, adhered to the metal object.
