Archimide Seguso picture frame 1950s

About the Item

Archimede Seguso oval frame with a structure in transparent twisted glass. Brass mount. Made in Italy, around 1950 Master glassmaker, designer and entrepreneur, Archimede Seguso is responsible for the rediscovery of the screed manufacturing of heavy glass and massive sculpture in the twentieth century style. Son of the furnace master Antonio Seguso, he began working at the age of eleven in the Barovier Artistic Glassworks. In 1933 he founded Barovier Seguso & Ferro, where he covered the role of master of the main team, realizing the designs of Flavio Poli and forging solid thick vases, lamps and sculptures. Having sold his share of the company in 1946, he opened the Archimede Seguso Artistic Glass Factory, obtaining complete artistic independence. He is master and creator of almost all realizations. An extraordinary technical innovator, Seguso rediscovers the ancient blowing techniques to create the famous Filigree, a light blown glass with different textures. To these are added other series such as the Merletti, the Piume and the coral and gold vases from the 1950s. Between 1960 and 1970 he creates intensely polychrome works with overlapping bands, continuous threads, starry filigree and optical tendencies. From 1936 to 1966 he took part in the eleven editions of the Venice Biennale. His works are exhibited at the Milan Triennale and at Expo '58 in Brussels. National and international retrospectives are dedicated to him (New York 1989, Japan 1990). Among his latest creations, the series of sculptures Rotture, made in solid submerged glass.
