About the Item

Fine French Ormolu Crown Frame with Tinted Photograph, circa 1890–1910 A richly detailed French ormolu (gilt bronze) portrait frame, surmounted by a regal crown finial and finely decorated in the neoclassical manner. The rectangular frame features an engine-turned ground inset with applied rosettes at the corners, all within a border of stylized anthemion motifs, emblematic of the 19th-century revival of ancient Greek and Roman decorative vocabularies. At the crest rises a commanding royalist crown finial, closed by intersecting arches and surmounted by a cross. Its circlet is enriched with fleur-de-lys and jewel-like bosses—motifs long associated with the Bourbon monarchy and the enduring emblems of French royalty. While at a glance reminiscent of Russian Imperial regalia, the predominance of fleur-de-lys and anthemion confirms its French royalist symbolism. Such frames were often produced during the late 19th and early 20th centuries for aristocratic and bourgeois households that wished to celebrate loyalty to monarchy and tradition. The frame holds an oval aperture (2.5 in. high x 2 in. wide) protected by glass, currently displaying a tinted photographic portrait of two elegantly dressed women, circa 1900–1920. The frame itself measures 6 in. high x 4 in. wide x 0.5 in. deep, with a red velvet back and suspension ring for wall display. Symbolism: The crown and cross signify divine right, the fleur-de-lys purity and sovereignty, the anthemion eternal renewal, and the rosettes beauty and loyalty. Together, they render this frame both a decorative object and a statement of identity. Condition: Good antique condition, with minor age toning and wear to the gilding, consistent with age. Provenance: Private European collection.
