George V Silver and Crocodile Leather Photograph Frame
About the Item
A George V silver and crocodile leather Photograph Frame, of large size, with silver inner and outer borders, linked by silver mitre corners. The lining is made up of beige watered silk with a black leather back. Hallmarked for London 1915, initials CD stand for Charles Henry Dumenil Ltd. The business of Charles Dumenil Ltd was established in 1879 and was wound up in 1938. They had premises in Golden Square, Soho, London and expanded in 1910 by opening additional premises in Beak Street, Golden Square. They are listed as manufacturing goldsmiths and silversmiths, making a speciality of gold and silver dressing bag fittings, also toilet sets, table mirrors such as the present example, cigar and cigarette boxes. The firm's decision to specialise made them leaders in their field. Interestingly, the production of silver in the first part of World War One was not unduly interrupted, despite the carnage in Northern France at the time this frame was made.
