About the Item

This is a large tilting antique pine wood dovetailed 19th century photography wood darkroom contact printing frame on a mobile wheeled stand A printing frame or a 'chassis presse photo' in French is an essential instrument for every printer of alternative techniques and historical processes. Due to its large size the printing frame could be used to print without waste on a 70x100cm paper. The pressure that the battens and spring produce historically united paper and negatives inside, unevennesses were overcome by the use of felt, a new piece of ruby red felt in this case (the original bright red one is also present but heavily affected by moths). A big printing frame like this one needs lots of springs (6 battens with each 3 springs, so 18 springs in total) to equally distribute the pressure points on the bottom. The back base under the battens is divided into hinged panels and it is entirely removable for exact printing positioning. The thick glass can be completely removed, to ease cleaning it. Some photographers still use these old frames in the darkroom. It could also be used as a large picture frame or a room divider because of the stand and both sides are quite interesting to look at. The base is 130cm (51.2") wide and 62cm (24.4") deep, with the frame upright (vertical) the total height is 133cm (52.4") When the frame is in horizontal position the total height is 89cm (35"), the width stays 130cm (51.2") and the construction then is 81cm (31.9") deep.
