About the Item

This superb Murano art glass picture frame was hand-crafted in Italy circa 1990. Murano mosaic Murrine plaques adorn the picture view of the frame, which features an L-shaped Plexiglass framing. The Murrine glass panels are matte and come in red, blue, and yellow. The lower right corner of the design conceals an M monogram signature. The artist has not been identified. The frame is in excellent condition, with no pronounced signs of wear. Dimensions: Overall: 5.13 in wide (13 cm) x 2 in deep (5 cm) x 7.07 in high (18 cm). View (picture size): 2.94 in wide (7.5 cm) x 4.75 in high (12 cm). Note: Glassmakers create murrine (singular: murrina) by forming colored patterns or images in a glass cane, which are revealed when they cut the cane into thin cross-sections. Murrine can be made in infinite designs, from simple circular or square patterns to complex, detailed designs and even portraits of people. One familiar style is the flower or star shape, which is called millefiori when used together in large numbers from several different canes. Murrine production first appeared in the Middle East more than 4,000 years ago and was revived by Venetian glassmakers on Murano in the early 16th century.
