Nicolas Perelle "Christ Speaking to the Shepherds" Engraving 17th Century

About the Item

This charming engraving by Nicolas Perelle depicts a biblical scene surrounded by lush nature. In this space of nature lies an antiquisite ruin evoking the archaeological excavations carried out in Italy at that time. The biblical scene is evoked by the presence of the two shepherds with Christ in the left part of the engraving. The whole scene follows the aesthetic canons established in the 17th century by French artists such as Nicolas Poussin or Simon Vouet. The engraving shows tears at the top, but restored. It shows signs of wear on the sides (right and left). A tear of 4 cm is present in the architecture but totally invisible on the engraving). Nicolas Perelle is a French painter and engraver of the XVIIth century (1631-1695). He is the son of a great engraver Gabriel Perelle and is mainly known for his engravings "Les glorieuses conquêtes de Louis Grand Roy de France et de Navarre dédiées au roy". His work shows great similarities with that of his father, to the point that it becomes difficult to differentiate their work. Nicolas Perelle was influenced by the work of the painter Simon Vouet and his school. Sold in sheet, to frame.

Humorous engraving typical of Flemish representations of the 17th century, representing two seated drinkers . We can see a woman with a glass in her left hand and a carafe in her right, while a man who probably drunk sleeps on the table. Beautiful achievement typical of the Flemish school of the 17th century. Gerard ter Borch - or Terburg - also known as "the young man" was born in 1617 in Zwolle near Amsterdam and died in 1681 in Deventer. He worked as a genre painter and portraitist and was very active especially in Münster and Amsterdam. He discovered his talent for drawing at the age of eight and became a pupil of his father Gerard ter Borch, known as "the old man". The Dutch painter Hendrick Avercamp supported Terburg. He studied with Pieter de Molyn (Dutch painter, draughtsman, engraver and publisher) for three years (1632-1635). He travelled extensively between London, Germany, France and Italy. He in turn became the master of his pupil Caspar Netscher...
