This 16th Century Buddha torso is from Ayutthaya, Thailand and made from Sandstone. Ayutthaya period sculpture closely follows older Khmer designs. Seated Buddhas of this type were made in 3 parts - the head, torso, and the lower body with crossed legs. The 3 parts were stacked, joined together, covered in stucco and then painted. Over time the parts were often separated. The patina on this stone torso is richly aged, indicating that the separation occurred a very long time ago.
