1967 Abstract Ceramic Sculpture By Tomiya Matsuda (1939-2011)
About the Item
Tomiya Matsuda (1939-2011) studied at the Kyoto University during the late 1950s and early 1960s, the most active time for the Sodeisha group. After obtaining his graduate degree, Matsuda worked as a visiting professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) in 1967 and 1968. This sculpture was produced during this period, and the Sodeisha influence is most evident.
Abstract in form, the sculpture has vivid graphic designs in blue, green, orange and yellow juxtaposed against a sober black ground. Going beyond the Sodeisha influence, Matsuda incorporated elements of western geometric abstraction in his works completed during his tenure at SAIC.
From the estate of William August Hoffman, a professor of ceramics at SAIC during Matsuda's time there. Hoffman acquired the work from the artist when Matsuda returned to Japan in 1968.
