About the Item

This statue cast in heavy iron is an interesting example of pieces made and knows as Berlin Ironwork. During and after the Napoleonic wars German citizens where encouraged to donate precious metals of gold and silver to the state to help fund the coast and debts caused by the war effort. It was customary to give back as token pieces made of iron a fundamental wartime commodity representing the gift made to the state. Jewelry was most commonly given to the state as gold was needed to pay for materials and supplies but table and flatware, as well as silver for display, were also important to the cause. Token gifts back to the people often took the form given such as jewelry. These rings and the like would have had patriotic slogans or references and were proudly worn by all classes. In the cases of large more elaborate donations, some larger pieces were made as token gifts. These included decorative household items, statues, commemorative plaques and table wear. These to would have had themes displayed that resonated with German pride, civic achievement, and personal sacrifice. This statue representing one of Germany’s most illustrious playwrights, authors, thinkers and a leading exponent of the classical and romantic movements would have been a natural choice as he was one of the countries most important figures. His reputation was cemented shortly after the war by several books published which made him a European international celebrity of his day. Goethe traveled extensively and was interested in classical themes and antiquity. Shown in this figure as a man dressed in current clothes but still draped in classical garb with a laurel wreath in his hand he seems to bridge the old world and the new order brought on by the war all at once. This statue is a reduction of the Goethe Monument found in Frankfurt which was erected in 1844 Condition Disclosure: While we do our best to carefully inspect and give a full report on the condition of any item we sell, pointing out any repairs or alterations that may have been done to the best of our knowledge, as is the case with any antique and vintage item, there is a possibility that at some point in the life of the piece that there may have been damaged which has been professionally repaired and as such a repair undetectable, it is therefore impossible for us to disclose... we recommend that you also read and agree to the 1st dibs user agreement, particularly sections 9,13,15,18,19 and 27

circa 1880 French Plaster Sculpture of Francois Rene De Chateaubriand
Located in Dallas, TX
Made in plaster, circa 1880, this interesting French sculpture depicts Francois Rene de Chateaubriand sitting with his legs crossed in an armchair. A rolled scroll is in his right hand, which rests on his thigh and books and scrolls are strewn beneath the chair. Chateaubriand’s long overcoat is unbuttoned and gathered, showing an elegant frock and bowtie ensemble beneath. Beneath the chair is a shaped plinth with cavetto molding on all sides and “Chateaubriand” incised along the front. Francois Rene de Chateaubriand was born in Saint-Malo, France in 1768, the youngest of 10 children. A noted politician, historian, and author, Chateaubriand had a profound effect on literature, being the first major figure of Romanticism. Chateaubriand was also the original man of letters, a group of French authors that also had burgeoning political careers. A fellow man of letter, Victor Hugo was so inspired by Chateaubriand that he is known for having said “To be Chateaubriand or nothing”. This French plaster sculpture...
