About the Item

The Sparton model 557 radio was designed by Walter Dorwin Teague for the Sparks-Worthington Company in Jackson, Michigan, in 1936. The radio, known as the "sled" or "3-knob," is considered to be one of the best examples of Deco Streamline style. The radio features cobalt blue mirrors on the front, top, and left side, with a contrasting ebony lacquer finish and five chrome bands or "speed lines." The asymmetric, geometric shapes and accent designs are distinctively Art Deco in appearance. This is a prime example of a highly sought-after Art Deco radio that no other manufacturer matches in its flair and presence. The chassis still retains the original manufacturer's paper tag, affixed to the back. The Radio was originally presented in June of 1936 to an audience of over 250 radio dealers at a convention held in Jackson, Michigan, Sparton's hometown. The electronics of the radio have been refurbished to good working order. Measurements: 9" Tall X 16.5" Wide X 8.5" Deep United States, 1936
