About the Item

This abstract sculpture in Portuguese marble was sculpted ‘en taille directe’ by the Belgian artist Jan Keustermans. The soft pink veins of the Portuguese marble are beautiful. The sculpture is not signed. It is a unique piece, one of his most recent work. It is the first time that Jan Keustermans and his family offer a selection of sculptures, directly from the artist’s atelier. Jan Alfons Keustermans (°1940) is a Belgian sculptor, medalist and draftsman. He studied at the National Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp and until 2000 he was director of the Municipal Academy of Fine Arts in Turnhout. He has won several art prizes for sculpture and participated in group exhibitions in Belgium and abroad. He has created more than 850 works. In 1994, he won the Ministry of Finance’s competition for a portrait of King Albert II on the Belgian currency. In 1997 he designed a similar version for the euro coin. Keustermans’ work evolved from figurative to completely abstract. He describes the abstract works as ‘memorial stones’. He works in bluestone, bronze, plaster, clay, marble, polyester and stone.

Abstract Marble Sculpture by Emile Gilioli
By Émile Gilioli
Located in Stamford, CT
This beautiful marble sculpture by Emile Gilioli is made of rose veined marble (white/pink). The sculpture is signed and dated on wooden base. "Emile Gilioli was born to a family on Italian shoemakers who had settled beside the Canal Saint-Martin. After the first World War, the family moved back towards Italy, settling in Nice. In 1932, Gilioli took courses at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs de Nice, notably with the future artist Marie Raymond. During the Second World War, Gilioli was mobilized in Grenoble where he passed the remainder of the conflict. He made the acquaintance of Andry Fracy, a conservationist at the Grenoble Musee des baux-arts and led him to discover cubism. After the war, Gilioli settled in Saint-Martin-de-La-Cluze near Grenoble, where he sculpted in his workshop. His art was associated in a certain way with the deeds of the French Renaissance. He became friendly with Thomas Gleb...
