About the Item

This Pulcino bird was designed by Alessandro Pianon for Vistosi in 1962. Hand-blown in bright orange-red Murano glass and set on hammered copper legs, it is one of the sculptural birds that together form the Pulcino series. This example is in excellent, original condition, preserving a subtle patina on the copper legs Named after the Italian word for 'little chick' the Pulcino series reflects Pianon’s vision of combining playful simplicity with fine craftsmanship. The birds are reduced to almost graphic forms, brought to life through form, colour and delicate details. Today the Pulcino birds are recognized as a discreet but important contribution to postwar Italian design. Their mix of vivid Murano glass and modest humor reflects both the skill of Venetian glassmakers and Pianon’s unique creative voice. This bright orange example embodies the joyful yet refined quality that has made the series enduringly popular among collectors and admirers of mid-century design. Alessandro Pianon (1931–1984) was a Venetian architect and designer who studied at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura in Venice. He joined Vetreria Vistosi in the late 1950s, where he was invited to create works that combined the centuries-old Murano tradition with a fresh, modern sensibility.

The sculpture stands 285cm (112.2 inch) tall, is 101cm (39.7inch) wide on both side and rests on a 116cm (45.6inch) round base. The Verticali sculptures were conceived for the outdoors, anchored to the earth, often in correspondence with the surrounding architecture. They are stainless steel sculptures, larger than life, built by using segments of cylinders and spheres welded together in symmetrical or asymmetrical relationships. Because of their highly polished, reflective metal surfaces, these sculptures reflect the surrounding environment and architecture and are in a constant process of change Roberto Cordone (born 11 April 1941 in Vallecrosia, Liguria) is an Italian artist and sculptor.
