Artisan Michael Good Sterling Silver Hyperbolic Paraboloid Sculpture on Marble

About the Item

Sculptor and Jewelry Designer Michael Good designed and hand formed this sterling silver Hyperbolic Paraboloid sculpture on black marble base. Signed M.Good 925. In the Mid-Century Modern Style. Michael worked with famed Finnish-born American master metalsmith Heikki Seppa starting in 1977, when Heikki did a workshop at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts on Deer Isle, ME. It was actually Michael who figured out the last technical part of the process that makes anticlastic raising what it is today, forming the open seam spiculum. Michael returned the following year to be Heikkis TA, and then maintained a relationship with Heikki until he passed away. Additionally he filled in for Heikki as the metals instructor at Washington University in St. Louis in 1982, when Heikki was on sabbatical. Although he did make that same form a few other times going forward for this award, no two pieces were ever the same size, and the only other sculpture that I am aware of him making in that form was a forged piece. Info Courtesy of his son Avi Good. St. Louis Art Museum Beaux Arts Council Award, which Joan and Lester Crancer received in 1999. Joan Conway Crancer, daughter of the famous St. Louis painter Fred Conway, and was a passionate art collector, included in her collection were Calder Sculptures, Max Beckman paintings and Roman antiquities. She was actively involved with the Saint Louis Art Museum, where she served for many years as Museum Trustee and member of the Acquisition Committee, and remained Honorary Trustee for the rest of her life. Together with her husband, they endowed a gallery at the museum, named for Alice and Fred Conway, her parents. Heikki Seppä was born in Säkkijärvi, Finland. In 1941 he studied metalsmithing at Goldsmith's School in Helsinki, and later at the Georg Jensen silver factory in Copenhagen. In 1950 he emigrated with his first wife to Prince Rupert, British Columbia. Then they moved to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where he attended Cranbrook Academy of Art.
