About the Item
Reinterpretation in bronze of an African fertility doll.
These traditional figures have long symbolised fertility, protection, and maternal care in African cultures. I’ve always been drawn to their form and meaning, and this is my take - cast in bronze, handcrafted and one of kind. Edition 1 of 1.
This ornamental piece is a nod to heritage and ritual, but reimagined in bronze through my own sculptural language.
African fertility dolls, particularly renowned among the Ashanti of Ghana and the Namji of Cameroon, are steeped in tradition and symbolism. The Ashanti’s iconic Akua'ba doll, with its large, round head and stylized features, was believed to help women conceive and ensure beauty in their future children. Girls often carried these dolls on their backs, just like real babies, nurturing a sense of maternal care from a young age. In Cameroon, Namji dolls are more geometric in form, lavishly decorated with beads, shells, and leather—each element thought to enhance the doll's spiritual power. With their striking forms and rich cultural significance, fertility dolls embody both ancestral wisdom and artistic expression.
Today, they’re appreciated not only for their cultural depth, but also for their striking design and craftsmanship.
Just finished and ready to find its place.
